Frostwire shifts from Gnutella to BitTorrent

Who doesn't remember Limewire ? It used to be one of the most famous peer-to-peer networks around. Everybody was using Limewire, with millions of users worldwide downloading their favorite mp3 files.

Well, in 2010 Limewire closed shop, and Frostwire overtook it (or rather, stepped in its place) as the number-1 peer-to-peer network. That was on the Gnutella network. Then Frostwire announced that it would no longer operate on Gnutella. BitTorrent was its new home. This was in the end of June 2011. Their main reason for the move was due to the fact that Gnutella is choke-full of spam.

The Frostwire team were quoted as saying the following, “We decided to go all out with BitTorrent and spend our time making FrostWire the best BitTorrent client out there, and not fighting the endless spam battle. There are many opportunities to take in the realm of legal file-sharing and social networking that you will see happen as FrostWire 5 keeps evolving."

For now Gnutella's future is looking extremely bleak. There are only a handful of networks that use it. Now with the most famous one on BitTorrent it seems like Gnutella's days are indeed numbered.

The latest version of Frostwire is 5.2.11., and you can download it here (for FREE).
